Budget cuts and local accountability: adapting to the challenges

Courses for police managers and analysts

Policing has never changed as fast and as much as it is today: the service must not only adapt to a major reform programme but also work within tighter budgets while meeting the government's requirements for becoming a more professional service. Our courses, written and taught by Malcolm Hibberd, are designed with these challenges in mind.

Performance Management 4 June 2013

Performance has never been more important in policing. Forces are expected to maintain services in the face of budget cuts, and public scrutiny of police performance is changing following the transition from police authorities to PCCs. This course addresses how managers should respond to information and what they should do to actually improve policing services.

The course is aimed primarily at police managers and analysts who are concerned with improving performance. However, those from other parts of the public sector will also find it useful.

What previous participants have said:

"Opened my mind to performance management rather than performance indicators"

"Thoroughly enjoyed it - has really made me think - will definitely be useful in the future"

Statistics for Performance 5 June 2013

Statistics are central to our attempts to understand performance, but they are often misused and their potential is rarely exploited to the full. At a time when getting the most out of available resources is more important than ever, this course provides a non-technical introduction to how statistics can best used in performance management and other areas of policing and explains some of the common pitfalls in the interpretation of statistics.

The course is aimed primarily at police managers who want to understand statistics and analysis so that they can make better informed decisions to deliver improved performance. Analysts may also find it useful, as would managers and analysts working in other parts of the public sector.

What previous participants have said:

"This course was a breath of fresh air. It should be compulsory for all police officers, not just inspector and above"

"A potentially dry subject delivered in an engaging and interesting way"

Neighbourhood Problem Solving 6-7 June 2013

Problem solving can be at the heart of good neighbourhood policing, but to develop sustainable solutions the approach must be applied effectively. This two-day course builds on the widely used SARA (Scanning, Analysis, Response, Assessment) problem solving model, filling the gaps and providing skills to help practitioners develop realistic, tailored  and sustainable solutions to local problems in a practical policing context.

The course is aimed primarily at officers and staff working in local neighbourhood policing teams, at their managers, and at analysts whose work supports their activities. It will also be of interest to staff from other agencies working on local problem solving.

What previous participants have said:

"The course provided me with a practical toolkit that I can go away and put into practice straight away - I'm quite excited!"

"I wish I'd had this course when I first started in this role"
