Road Traffic Policing

Keeping our roads safe is one of the less glamorous aspects of policing, but crucially important. More than 3,000 people die in road traffic accidents every year and the costs of traffic accidents now exceed £1billion. The policing of our roads really matters.
The Foundation, having already published a feasibility study, is keen to house a National Survey on the Behaviour and Attitudes of Road Users. Unlike Australia, New Zealand and the United States, no such survey exists in the UK. Like the British Crime Survey, it would provide hugely valuable information on a wide range of issues, from aggressive and anti-social driving to congestion charging and the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.
The survey would gauge public awareness, opinion and support prior to introducing new initiatives and assist in assessing the influence of technological developments or changes in Government policy on the attitudes and behaviour of road users.
