The Oxford Policing Policy Forum is a joint initiative of The Police Foundation and the Centre for Criminology at the University of Oxford. Its aim is to create an opportunity for  stakeholders from a wide range of interest groups, including the police, government, other criminal justice agencies, the voluntary and private sectors, academia and the media to discuss fundamental issues under 'Chatham House' rules. 

February 2010: Policing drugs and alcohol : is harm reduction the way forward?

The eighth forum, sponsored by SunGard Public Sector Ltd, was held on 8th February and analysed the UK Drugs Policy Commission's (UKDPC) harm reduction strategy and in particular its implications for policing. Find out more here.

March 2009: Policing and Politics

The sixth forum discussed the increasing incursion of politics into policing (and vice-versa). Find out more here.

September 2008: Too much surveillance? 

The fifth Forum discussed this question by looking at four areas of surveillance: CCTV, interception of communication, the DNA Database and National Identity Cards. Find out more here.

January 2008: Should we be concerned about police powers? 

The fourth Forum discussed the growth of police powers, and its effects. Find out more here. 

June 2007: Is there a role for the police in addressing the prisons crisis? 

The third Forum looked at the relationship between policing and the rise in the prison population.  Find out more here.

November 2006: Governance and accountability

The second Forum looked at the issues surrounding police governance and accountability as a question of how to govern policing in a democratic society, and what it means for the police to be accountable, remains a profound and contraversial one. Find out more here.

March 2006: What are the police for?

The first Forum, which addressed the question 'What are the police for?' took its cue from Sir Ian Blair's call for a national debate about policing in his BBC Dimbleby Lecture.  Find out more here.
